Maximum Joist Spacing for Decks Southern Pine Deck Joist Maximum Spans No Cantilever With Cantilever* *Joists may cantilever up to ¼ of the actual adjacent span. For example, a 2 x 12 joist placed 16 OC. spanning 16-6 between supports may cantilever up to an additional 4-1 ½ for a total maximum length
Deck joist spacing. My father plans on using 5/4 cedar decking, and we are wondering if we should go 12" on center joists, or 16" on center joists? The deck will be 20X16. The joists will be 2x6 joists and the 5/4 deck boards will be running at 45 degrees to the floor joists.
Span entries are listed for 2×6 through 2×12 joists and 12 in., 16 in., and 24 in. on-center spacing. The illustrations one for cantilever joists and one for flush rim-beam hung joists point out where joist span measurements are taken from the saddle of the ledger mounted joist hanger to the center

I built a 14'x14' deck, the frame is 4x6 footers and a pair of 2x6's are the outside joists around the perimeter The floor joists I put at 34" OC, on the advice of a local shadetree carpenter who said 36" OC would be ok for floor joists on a deck.
2 Answers. It's fewer joist hangers to hang, and fewer nails to attach the deck to the joists. With that said, there's going to be a little more give with 24" spacing, it won't be the joists that are sagging, it will be the decking between joists. If you want a really solid feel, go with 2x6's 16"OC.
The proper deck joist span distance between supporting beams below the joists for your deck should be known before you start building and is needed to draft your deck plan. The spans of joists varies based upon several factors: joist size, spacing between joists, decking material and wood species. Select your decking material.
Deck Joist Size. Re: Deck Joist Size i use all 2x6's for joist max span is 7'. The strength of a deck is in the post and footings. It has nothing to do with joist span. Long joist span allow for way too much flexing of the wood due to severe climate and humidity changes. Decks require a bunch of post and beams.
When it comes to the anatomy of a deck, joists are part of a decks framing system. Each joist is one of a series of long, horizontal structures that support the decking itself. Each joist is one of a series of long, horizontal structures that support the decking itself.
Joist Span. The maximum distance a deck joist can span between supports is determined by the joist's dimensions and species, as well as the spacing between joists.
Part 1 - 12" Joist Spacing. Following are tables for the two most common required psf loads for 16 inch joist spacing. All of the tables are based on the use of 2 grade lumber. Table 3 is for 40 psf live load and 10 psf dead load on 16 inch joist centers. Table 4 is for 60 psf live load and 10 psf dead load on 16 inch joist centers. Table 3.
Joist: 2x8 If joists are spaced: 24" Span: 10 1/2' Joist: 2x10 If joists are spaced: 16" Span: 16 1/2' Joist: 2x10 If joists are spaced: 24" Span: 13 1/2' Decking. Decking boards span from joist to joist. If you use 5/4 decking, joists must be no farther apart than 16 inches. Decking made of 2x4s or 2x6s can span up to 24 inches.
The joist size in the above table. As far as Redwood framing with the pith content in 2nd growth I'd only use 1 heartwood not 2 as in the table. The cantilever overhang can be 1/4 the joist length, but again I would keep that to 2'-6 max. for 2x8. Deck loading has a tendency for the people to gather at the railing. So I typically don't go beyond that.
A 2x6 will span less than a 2x8 and so on. I am calculating the need for 32 pier blocks for a 16x16 deck. That seems show more I am building a floating, ground level deck in my back yard. All I am reading is that deck blocks cannot be more than 5ft apart, regardless of the joist size.
If op runs 2x6" with 11' as the joist run, they will need 3 per joist. At 16' that's 39 pier blocks. I would be running a beam at this point. Or some type of ground contact skid. But then I don't build temporary. For a low deck like this I would run 3 doubled 2x8" beams front middle back.
In all cases, they recommend that 2X6, all species, be used on 24" perpendicular and 16" diagonal spans. TREX specs call for max. 12" joist spacing when decking
What is the safe spacing of 2×6 deck joists to support a 3500 dead load of a sp. I would double up the joist in that area and also add double joist in between them to 12 oc Also add a double 2×8 beam underneath that area to break that 10 ft span in half .Then im sure it will be good to go .
To improve stiffness, try spacing the joists a little closer say 14" . That way, each joist will be carrying less weight and will therefore deflect and bounce a little less. Also, solid bridging between the joists at mid span helps to stiffen the whole floor by spreading the weight over several joists.
Recommended Beam and Joist Spans for Deck Framing Beam Span. The recommended span of a given beam is also determined by the dimensions of the timber, Joist Span. The maximum distance a deck joist can span between supports is determined by Cantilever. A cantilevered joist has an end that
Deck Joist Spacing, Span and Size Table. Unlike interior floor joists, you also have to take into account the direction and size of your decking. Plus, unlike floor joists, decks needs to be able to support the extra weight of pressure treated wood, handrails, as well as snowfall during winter.
